Celebrating 20 Years of PSDS — And Rocking Our Socks for a Reason

This morning at the Reigate Business Guild, I had the pleasure of meeting the wonderful Helen from PSDS (Positive & Support Down Syndrome), and it felt like one of those conversations that genuinely stops you in your tracks.

PSDS has been supporting individuals with Down syndrome and their families across Surrey for 20 years. Two decades of advocacy, inclusion, education and practical support — right here in our community.

And now, thanks to incredible local backing, they’ve secured a permanent community base on Prices Lane in Reigate. That’s not just a milestone — that’s legacy.

What PSDS Does (And Why It Matters)

PSDS works with families across Surrey, offering support from early years right through to adulthood. They help change perceptions, create inclusive opportunities, and build confidence for individuals with Down syndrome to thrive.

Their work is practical, human and deeply local.

This isn’t a distant national charity.
It’s here.
In our schools.
In our community spaces.
In our neighbourhoods.

World Down Syndrome Day – 21 March 2026

On 21 March 2026, the world comes together to mark World Down Syndrome Day — a global awareness initiative recognised internationally.

The date (21/3) symbolises the triplication of the 21st chromosome — the genetic difference that causes Down syndrome.

And one of the most joyful ways people show support?

Rock Your Socks.

Wearing brightly coloured or mismatched socks is a simple, visible way to celebrate that no two people are the same.

It’s fun.
It sparks conversations.
And it carries a powerful message about inclusion and individuality.

Down Syndrome Awareness Week – 16–22 March 2026

PSDS is also marking Down Syndrome Awareness Week (16–22 March 2026) with local events and fundraising activities.

Their message this year is simple:

Step out in mismatched socks.
Start conversations.
Support local families.

They’re encouraging individuals, schools, businesses and community groups to:

  • Hold a Rock Your Socks fundraiser
  • Organise a coffee morning, quiz night or bake sale
  • Join one of their events (including their annual Quiz Night & Raffle)
  • Simply donate and spread awareness

Because small actions, when multiplied across a community, become meaningful change.

20 Years — And Just Getting Started

Reaching 20 years as a local charity is no small thing. It takes resilience. It takes people. It takes trust.

And it takes a community that believes in what you’re doing.

PSDS has built something real in Surrey — and with their new permanent base in Reigate, they’re set up to continue that impact for the next 20 years and beyond.

If you’d like to:

  • Get involved
  • Attend an event
  • Run a Rock Your Socks fundraiser

Sometimes the most powerful support starts with something as simple as a pair of socks.

And this March, Surrey has the chance to show up, mismatched, colourful and proud.
